Get to know Geneva HS cheerleader Reese Gimre

GENEVA, Ill. — Reese Gimre, 14, has participated in cheerleading for two years. Currently a freshman at Geneva High School, she holds a spot on the Geneva Varsity Cheer squad. Reese told us she loves the team aspect of cheer and has formed such a strong bond with everyone on the team. She added, “It’s taught me how to work together with others. After being a gymnast, which is more of an individual sport, cheer has showed me that you need to work together to be successful.” One of the biggest challenges in cheerleading, Reese shared, is the mental aspect and getting scared to do things. To tackle this, she takes things one step at a time and makes sure she’s prepared to do the skill. Her pregame ritual of listening to music while getting ready and going over her day, also helps her mindset for the sport.

When asked for the best piece of advice she was ever given, Reese recalled guidance which was to follow what she wants to, and not be pressured to do anything by anyone else. Although she hasn’t competed with the sport yet, she’s learned with mistakes to take corrections into consideration and try her best to get better. Along these lines, helpful advice from a coach that “nothing will work unless the whole team trusts each other and that we really have to focus on the team as a whole,” are words Reese takes to heart as well.

When not at practice, or performing on the field or court, Reese loves to spend time with her friends and doing fun things with them. Some of her personal goals with cheer are to get better at tumbling and become a better flyer. She’s already had a great year with cheerleading and is exciting for what’s to come!
