Bellbrook HS boys basketball season preview

BELLBROOK, Ohio — The Bellbrook Eagles are back at it again for their 2022-2023 season. Head Varsity coach Donnie Tate has already started thinking about who’s going to be on what team. In his own words, he said “It’s all about how they SOAR (strong, one, accountable, respectful)”. Preseason the boys have been hard at work at open gyms and lifting. Coach says this year’s starters will be based on good leadership, skills, grades, talent, and any grade level. This season is going to be filled with a lot of diversity in grades and skill levels, new faces, as well as some old players playing again.

Building relationships not only with your coach but also with your teammates is very important and it builds a better team. They’re also working on this during the off-season and doing team bonding exercises such as watching other sports games together, like football, soccer, golf, etc. One of the most important but also saddest parts is when the coaches have to tell everyone who made it and who didn’t. To help this process coach tells the player if they’re being cut and why in person. Also, the players get 3-4 practices as a part of tryouts and open gym to help. After all, everyone is treated equally and fairly. Some events that Coach Donnie Tate is looking forward to are their annual “Meet The Team” (with all grades), the showcase, and their trip to Gatlinburg Tennessee during Christmas break.

Because the basketball team is always representing Bellbrook, they make sure to do a lot of service work to help around the community, like their yearly Mulch Sale which is a fundraiser and community service. The players on Varsity and JV both help Lions Club with any needs and youth programs around Bellbrook/Dayton. Changing the topic, a little bit, not only is Donnie Tate an outstanding coach but he also teaches Design Thinking at Beavercreek, which works on students’ group work, empathy, and problem-solving skills. This will be his 7th season coaching at Bellbrook and he is very excited about it. In conclusion, if you want to take away anything from this article it’s to be grateful for your coach and watch your morals when trying out. Don’t ride the bench. Be the Best, we’re Bellbrook Eagles after all.
