Top 5 active NFL win streaks versus division opponents

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (BVM) – On Sunday, the New York Jets and New England Patriots faced off in a Week 11 contest that held plenty of playoff implications. With the Jets coming into the game at 6-3, they had a chance to tie the Bills and Dolphins atop the AFC East with a win. Meanwhile, the Pats came in at 5-4, needing a win to stay in the division hunt, and to remain squarely in the wild card race.

On a windy and cold day in Foxborough, the contest was an ugly one throughout, as both defenses shined. Patriots quarterback Mac Jones struggled as he took six sacks on his way to a 20.4 quarterback rating. Jets signal-caller Zach Wilson wasn’t any better, completing just nine passes for 77 yards as the Patriots defense tormented him yet again.

With the game tied 3-3 and both offenses failing to lead a game-winning scoring drive in the fourth quarter, the teams seemed destined for overtime as the Jets punted the ball back to the Patriots with just seconds left on the clock. However, New England rookie cornerback Marcus Jones fielded the Braden Mann punt at his own 16-yard line, and then raced 84 yards for the game’s only touchdown to give the Pats a 10-3 victory.

The win was the 14th in a row for the Patriots over the Jets, a franchise streak second only to the Patriots’ 15 straight wins against the Bills from 2003-2010. Adding to the Jets’ devastation is the fact that they have lost 22 of their last 24 games against the Pats dating back to 2011, with the only two wins both coming in overtime in the 2013 and 2015 seasons.

While the Patriots’ streak is impressive, it will take beating the Jets a few more times to reach the NFL’s all-time longest division opponent winning streak set by the Miami Dolphins, who won 20 straight games over the Bills from 1970-1979.

There are a few other impressive divisional winning streaks currently in the NFL that could also someday threaten to rank on the all-time list. Here is a look at the top five.
