Tell us a bit about yourself.

Dayne Heisler: My name is Dayne Heisler. I have two younger brothers and a cat. I started curling seven years ago.

What sport do you compete in? How/why did you get started?

Heisler: The sport I mainly compete in is curling. The curling rink had a “bring a friend” day, and one of my friends decided to ask if I wanted to go. At first, I didn’t really like or dislike curling; it was just one of the many sports I played that my parents wanted me to try out. After a couple of years, and me becoming better and better I decided that curling was the sport for me.

What type of achievements have you accomplished already?

Heisler: Last year, my high school curling team won silver in the High School City Championship and gold in the South Central District Championship then played in Regionals where we made it to the A Final. During these events, most teams were two or three years older, meaning we had very tough competition if we wanted to even win the city championship. Our team was made up of all Grade 9 students. In order to get more experience, we entered in the Original 16 Wednesday Night Cash League this season. I also played in the new U15 Triples format this year and we played our 2nd bonspiel Dec 3rd in the CHAB Youth Bonspiel in Moose Jaw.

What is your goal in the sport?

Heisler: My main goal in curling and any sport in general is to have as much fun as I can with my team. I highly suggest that everyone else have that same goal in mind. If we are losing a game, our goal is of course to try to make our shots and come back to win the game, but who is going to want to continue a game if they’re not having fun? Last year we made it to Regionals in our first year, so I hope that our team can work to improve on that and make it to Provincials.

What do you love about the sport?

Heisler: I’m not quite sure why I love curling so much. The part I love the most about curling is spending time with my team and playing together. My team really makes me love curling much more than I would if I only played by myself. Other than the teamwork aspect, I am just naturally drawn to curling as a sport. I like games that involve strategy and that’s important in curling.

Advice to others interested in starting?

Heisler: My advice to others who are interested in starting curling, is to just start somewhere. It doesn’t matter if you’re playing with people who are five years older or younger than you. All that matters is that you’re having fun and learning as much as you can. We all have to start somewhere and it doesn’t matter where as long as you are having fun. You can borrow equipment at the rink to try it out. The people are all nice and it’s a very welcoming sport.
