Phil Jurkovec: Potential landing spots for BC transfer QB

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (BVM) – Making a difficult decision following a college football season is something Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec has had to become used to. After opening his college career at Notre Dame, the 6-foot-5 dual-threat quarterback finds himself back in the transfer portal after three seasons with the Eagles.

With over 5,000 passing yards during his tenure at Boston College, Jurkovec should be in demand with the recent news. The graduate transfer played in 24 games throughout his three seasons with the program, leading the Eagles to a 12-12 total record. This current season, however, has not come with the same expectations that the earlier campaigns have. An injured wrist in 2021 caused him to miss six games, while multiple injuries in the 2022 campaign tacked on four more. Behind 11 touchdown passes to eight interceptions, Boston College went just 3-9 on the year and of his eight starts, Jurkovec was able to secure just two wins on the season.

The disappointing 2022 campaign has the former, and now, recent transfer quarterback in a familiar spot. After little playing time in his two years at Notre Dame, Jurkovec entered the portal following his sophomore season in 2019. Some of the same teams that vied for his services back then, might reopen the conversation in the near future.

With teams around college football looking to upgrade their chances at the quarterback position for 2023, here’s a look at some of the potential landing spots for Jurkovec.

Pittsburgh

Current quarterback Kedon Slovis’ time with the program is still up in the air at this point in time, as the USC transfer has his options open and could head to the NFL after his senior season with the Panthers. If he were to head off, Jurkovec could finally make a return home after several chances in the past. Pitt recruited the Boston College quarterback coming out of high school and made a run at him after his transfer from Notre Dame in hopes of bringing in the Pennsylvania native. A move to the ACC could provide him an opportunity to break out following Kenny Pickett’s recent success at the program.

Northwestern

The Wildcats are coming off their worst season since 1989 and just let go of a handful of coaches on Pat Fitzgerald’s staff. A new look may be in store for Northwestern who are looking to get back to some of the success they’ve recently had. Landing a headliner like Jurkovec could go a long way for the 2023 season and would be just what the program needs on offense. Offensive coordinator Mike Bajakian never overlapped with Jurkovec after leaving the Boston College program in 2019, but a set of similar connections could lead both sides to a partnership.

Purdue

With Aidan O’Connell set for the NFL draft, Purdue could be in search of someone outside the program to compete for the starting job. With O’Connell’s success over the two previous seasons, this could be a perfect landing spot for Jurkovec if he isn’t looking to return back to his home state. With an appearance in this year’s Big Ten title game, the Boilermakers could be a dark horse when it comes to quarterbacks in the transfer portal. Class of 2022 top-10 quarterback recruit Brady Allen will likely get a first crack at the starting job but if the program looks for some additional options, Jurkovec should be on the list.
