Top 10 Washington Commanders players of all time
10. Joe Theismann, QB (1974-85)
Though not selected by Washington in the 1971 NFL Draft, Theismann would make his way to D.C. after a contract dispute with the Miami Dolphins and spending three years in the Canadian Football League. In 1974, the then-Redskins acquired Theismann’s rights from the Dolphins for their 1976 first-round pick and the move worked beautifully for the franchise.
Over his 12 seasons in Washington, Theismann was twice named to the Pro Bowl, was named an All-Pro in 1983 and is one of eight players in franchise history to ever be named league MVP when he won the award in 1983. Theismann was also under center for some of the most successful teams in franchise history, leading the team to the Super Bowl in back-to-back seasons in 1982 and 1983 and winning Super Bowl XVII. His 25,206 passing yards are the most in franchise history while his 160 touchdowns are third all time.
