Messi passes the egg photo for most-liked Instagram post
(BVM) – Lionel Messi’s Instagram post following his World Cup victory is officially the world’s most-liked Instagram post as of Tuesday morning – breaking the previous record set by a photo of an egg in 2019.
The Argentina forward, who won his first FIFA World Cup on Sunday, posted a slideshow of 10 photos from the final with a caption expressing his gratitude. The Instagram post reached 56.2 million likes right before 4 a.m. CT on Tuesday, which was within 36 hours of being posted.
In comparison, the famous Instagram egg previously rose to No. 1 after a 10-day-long social media experiment. The egg had 56.2 million likes as of the World Cup final, however, it currently sits at 56 million because fans started unliking the post to ensure that Messi would break the world record. The number of likes are constantly moving up and down because social media users are fighting for the egg to win its title back.

Now, Messi’s whopping 1.6 million comments contain writing from fans congratulating him for beating France and also for beating an egg. Social media users have even coined the phrase, “the GOAT has cracked the egg.”
Messi’s post went massively viral because he not only won his first World Cup, but he also led Argentina to win their first WC trophy in 36 years. His emotional message in the post also captured fans who watched what might have been his last World Cup ever. On Monday, he earned another milestone in becoming the second person to ever reach 400 million followers on Instagram (the first being Cristiano Ronaldo).
In general, Messi is a very popular topic on Instagram; he takes up five of the top 10 spots on the list of most-liked Instagram posts of all time.
