Chris Beard fired; Who will be 2023-24 Texas basketball coach?
Coaches with upside
Royal Ivey, Brooklyn Nets assistant
Another candidate with Longhorn ties, Ivey starred at Texas with his defense before becoming a 10-year NBA veteran. Since 2014, he has been an assistant coach in the G League as well as the NBA but has no experience as a head coach. This route could be a risky decision for Texas, but his background with the school could be a big selling point with the fans.
Richard Pitino, New Mexico
Still 40 years old, Pitino already has 11 years of head coaching experience. Son of Rick, the younger Pitino has quickly turned New Mexico into one of the best mid-major teams in the country. The former Big Ten Coach of the Year at Minnesota is bound to get a big job in the near future. Could that opportunity be at Texas?
Jerome Tang, Kansas State
Tang is very familiar with the state of Texas after a nearly 20-year run as an assistant at Baylor. After plenty of opportunities came his way, he finally took a head coaching position at Kansas State this past offseason. But would Tang really leave Manhattan after just one season?
