Lovie Smith fired: Who will be Texans’ 2023 head coach?

HOUSTON (BVM) – The end of the regular season came with more dramatics than most Houston Texans fans would have expected during the final week of the year. After narrowly beating the Indianapolis Colts in a late-game stunner, the Texans quickly enacted the opening of the 2022 offseason by letting go of head coach Lovie Smith.

The move, which makes Smith the second consecutive head coach to be let go by the organization in following seasons, ended his Texans’ tenure with just a 3-13-1 record on the year. While the firing based on the slip from No. 1 to No. 2 in the NFL draft is more speculative than anything else, Houston general manager Nick Caserio will have his work cut out for him moving forward.
With the No. 2 selection in the upcoming draft, Caserio and his staff will be in search of some long-term stability for the team’s head coaching role. Ever since the end of Bill O’Brien’s tenure with the team in 2019, the Texans have yet to find a similar answer.
With what should be an open AFC South moving forward, Houston has to feel hard-pressed to take control of the division in the future. The start of that plan will begin when the Texans begin to interview candidates. Here’s a look at the top five options for the Houston Texans’ head coaching job.
