TAMPA, Fla. (BVM) — Two ownership groups from Tampa battled to own an NHL team in 1990. One group that included Hall of Famer Phil Esposito paid the expansion fee of $50 million and was awarded the NHL franchise known today as the Tampa Bay Lightning.
