LOS ANGELES (BVM) – Tiger Woods set the golf world on fire on Friday when he announced via Twitter that he would be competing in the Genesis Invitational. It’s Woods’ first PGA Tour since missing the cut at St. Andrews last summer and it’s his first non-major start to the PGA Tour since 2020 at the Zozo Championship.

Woods has recently said that he would be focusing on majors due to his injuries but didn’t rule out playing in non-major events. Playing in the Genesis Invitational makes sense since it’s where he made his PGA Tour debut as a 16-year-old. Woods is also the host of the event. It was also around the time of the 2021 Genesis Invitational that Woods was in a car accident that ended his full-time career competing on the PGA Tour.

Last year, Woods played in three majors before ending his season in July. Since then, the only time anyone has seen Woods playing is during the The Match exhibition and the PNC Championship with his son. In both events, he used a cart.

Woods made the cut at the Masters last year, then had to withdraw from the PGA Championship before missing the cut at St. Andrews. His lingering injuries from a car accident as well as other injuries were apparent during his play last year. Woods announcing he is ready to go for a non-major event ahead of the Masters suggests that he is feeling strong enough to walk the course and play at a competitive level.

The Genesis Invitational is being held at the Riviera Golf Course, a course Woods has never won a professional event at, and will have a $20 million purse. Woods will certainly be met with applause as golf fans welcome back the best to ever do it and watch him try to win his 83rd tour event.
