Learn the sport of lawn bowling at the Sun City Bowling Club
SUN CITY CENTER, Fla. — Have you ever heard of lawn bowling? If you have, did you know there’s a league right here in Sun City? I recently learned about the sport of lawn bowling and found out that there are hundreds of players who participate in games and tournaments nearly every day of the week, from mornings, to afternoons and evenings, at the Sun City Bowling Club (SBLC). Located in Sun City Center, Florida this organization has been in existence since 1962 and was originally created by the founder of the Sun City retirement community; none other than Mr. Dell Webb himself.
The game of lawn bowling is similar to Bocce Ball where individuals and teams compete by ‘bowling’ heavy balls in the direction of a ‘jack’, attempting to see who gets closest, and scoring points based on the number of bowls that are closer than their opponent’s. The biggest difference is that the bowls are not completely symmetrical, with one side of the bowl being more round and heavier than the other, which is what is known as the ‘bias’ – this causes the bowls to curve when rolled or thrown. Much like other outdoor sports, games are played to 21; and similar to the sport of curling, there is much strategy and skill involved.
The SBLC offers free lessons each month, and there is an entire calendar of events that will be played through this year and into 2024. Anyone interested in learning more, or watching and playing in a game can contact Bob at 615-848-3549 or visit Sun City Center Lawn Bowling Club website for more details.
