Could Michael Mayer become Notre Dame’s best first-round TE?

Ken MacAfee, San Francisco 49ers (No. 7 overall, 1978)

Starting off the list is the highest-selected tight end in Notre Dame history. MacAfee was a superstar during his time with the Fighting Irish, earning first-team All-American honors in three consecutive seasons including back-to-back consensus honors in 1976 and 1977. He was also the Walter Camp player of the year as a senior in 1977, the same year he led Notre Dame to a national championship.

After being selected by the 49ers in the 1978 NFL Draft, MacAfee had a decent start to his career, recording 46 receptions for 471 yards and five touchdowns over 29 games with 25 starts. However, after the 49ers tried to switch him to guard, MacAfee decided to leave the team and join dental school and he never played an NFL regular season game again.
