JJ Kohl, freshman
Kohl joined the Iowa State program as the most decorated of the quarterbacks at the high school level. A consensus four-star recruit, Kohl threw for 2,023 yards and 17 touchdowns, completing 64.9% of his passes and also rushed for 187 yards and five scores during his senior season at Ankeny High School. His success earned the signal caller Iowa Print Sports Writers Association first-team all-state honors and a spot on the 2023 Under Armour All-American game roster.
In addition to his high regard among scouts, Kohl also understands the Iowa State program well as a legacy commit. His father Jamie was the starting kicker for the Cyclones from 1995-98, and still ranks among the top 10 in program history in career scoring, extra points made and field goals made. Given his status as a legacy and success at the high school level, many fans have been excited about Kohl’s arrival though even the most diehard supporters may be a bit nervous to hand over the reins to a true freshman. However, given the current situation, Kohl may bring the energy needed both on the field and in the stands for Iowa State to keep the ship afloat.
