Top 5 Calder Trophy candidates for 2023-24 NHL season

5. Matthew Knies, Toronto Maple Leafs
Toronto drafted Knies in the second round of the 2021 NHL Entry Draft, but he remained in college and improved with the Minnesota Golden Gophers. He racked up 75 career points for Minnesota and was called up for the Maple Leafs Stanley Cup playoff run, appearing in three games and recording four points (one goal and three assists).

Knies will also have the opportunity to play alongside Toronto’s “Big Four” for a full season and could be a replacement for Michael Bunting who left in free agency. He will be competing with new additions Tyler Bertuzzi and Max Domi for a spot in the top six, but either way, Knies has a solid shot of recording 40-plus points, making him a favorite for the award.
