College football’s top 5 conference championship matchups

5. No. 2 Michigan vs. No. 16 Iowa – Saturday, 8:00 p.m. ET, FOX

The Big Ten championship game in Indianapolis features two terrific programs, yet has a high likelihood of being the biggest blowout among Power 5 conference title games this weekend. That’s evidenced by Michigan being listed as at least a three-touchdown favorite against Iowa by most sportsbooks thus far.

Coming off of their third straight win over Ohio State, the Wolverines are riding high at 12-0 and are poised for their third consecutive College Football Playoff appearance. While Michigan is led by star quarterback J.J. McCarthy and running back Blake Corum, it is actually the Wolverines’ defense which is ranked No. 2 in the nation that has carried them most of the year.

Iowa’s defense is also a top-10 unit in the country, but the Hawkeyes’ offense has struggled throughout the season. Iowa has not scored over 22 points in any of its last seven games which could spell trouble against a stout Michigan defense. Kirk Ferentz’s guys will have their work cut out for them against a Michigan program that has won 44 of the 63 all-time matchups between the Hawkeyes and Wolverines which includes a recent 42-3 blowout in the 2021 Big Ten Championship.
