Jacque Vaughn fired; 5 Brooklyn Nets head coach candidates

BROOKLYN, N.Y. (BVM) – The Brooklyn Nets have fired Jacque Vaughn after a 21-33 start to the 2023-24 season. Vaughn went 71-68 overall and 0-8 in the playoffs as head coach of the Nets across parts of three seasons.

Vaughn, who played in the league from 1997-2009, joined the Nets as an assistant in 2016 after spending over three seasons as head coach of the Orlando Magic. The 49-year-old served as Brooklyn’s interim head coach after Kenny Atkinson was fired in 2020 and returned as an assistant after Steve Nash was hired.

Vaughn was named the Nets’ permanent head coach after Nash was fired in November 2022 and earned a contract extension last year as he helped Brooklyn to a 43-32 finish to the season and a No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs where the team was eventually swept by the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Nets began the 2023-24 season 13-10 before hitting a tailspin over the past couple of months, going just 8-23 since mid-December. Brooklyn also lost five of its last six contests entering All-Star weekend and hit rock bottom in the team’s final game before the break, losing by 50 points to the Boston Celtics

With multiple players reportedly losing faith in Vaughn as the team continued to struggle, general manager Sean Marks made another coaching move that will result in Brooklyn searching for its fourth head coach in Marks’ eight years with the franchise. Here are five candidates to become the Nets’ next head coach.
