Brian Burns’ free agency: 5 landing spots for Pro Bowl OLB

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (BVM) – Brian Burns has quietly become one of the top edge rushers in the NFL over the last five seasons with the Carolina Panthers. However, it remains uncertain if the former first-round pick out of Florida State will continue his career in Carolina, or be playing elsewhere next season.

Burns is slated to become a free agent unless the Panthers choose to use the franchise tag on him. Earlier this week at the NFL combine, new Carolina general manager Dan Morgan said that the team would be willing to use the franchise tag on Burns if needed, but also emphasized that “all options are on the table.” That could include a new contract from the Panthers, being tagged and then traded, or entering free agency.

No matter what direction Burns’ offseason goes, he is sure to garner plenty of interest as a free agent or potential trade candidate. The 6-foot-5, 250-pound linebacker has racked up at least 7.5 sacks in each of his five seasons in the league with a career-best 12.5 sacks in 2022. He has also made 50 or more total tackles in the last four seasons while earning two Pro Bowl nods.

Burns’ large frame and speed off the edge make him an incredibly valuable asset and one of the top defenders available this offseason. Here are five teams Burns could be playing for next season.
