5 teams who could trade for Max Scherzer if Rangers sell
ARLINGTON, Texas (BVM) – The Texas Rangers have failed to live up to expectations this season following a World Series title in 2023. That could lead the franchise to move a few players as the MLB trade deadline approaches, including veteran pitcher Max Scherzer.
Recently, USA TODAY MLB columnist Bob Nightengale reported that rival general managers expect the Rangers to make multiple members of their pitching staff available at the deadline including relievers David Robertson and Kirby Yates, and starters Andrew Heaney, Michael Lorenzen and Scherzer.
Scherzer is no stranger to being moved midseason. After becoming an eight-time All-Star and three-time Cy Young Award winner during stints with the Tigers and Nationals during the 2010s, the veteran right-hander was dealt to the Dodgers at the 2021 trade deadline. At last year’s deadline, Scherzer was traded to the Rangers, helping lead Texas to a World Series title and the second championship of the 39-year-old’s MLB career.
Following the 2023 campaign, Scherzer had surgery to repair a herniated disc in his back and dealt with thumb soreness and a nerve issue that caused him to miss nearly three months to begin the 2024 season. Since making his season debut on June 23, Scherzer has gone 1-2 in three starts with a 2.70 ERA and 11 strikeouts.
Despite the injuries and the fact that he will turn 40 later this month, Scherzer has still proven capable of being a valuable piece in a contender’s starting rotation down the stretch, and he will be an intriguing name to watch around the trade deadline if Texas makes him available. Here are five teams Scherzer could be traded to if the Rangers decide to move on from the veteran pitcher.
