Unicorns capture area championship

SAN ANTONIO — Pushing further into the Class 5A-I postseason, New Braunfels volleyball defeated San Antonio Southwest on Thursday night. The Unicorns (35-13 overall) swept the Dragons 3-0 (25-13, 25-21, 25-19) for their first area championship since 2016. Junior setter Kingsley Minus led the Unicorns with 13 kills, seconded by sophomore outside hitter Shaylie Schaefer with nine. Senior middle blocker Bailey Scott, senior outside hitter Natalie Ballenger and sophomore outside hitter Riley Lundegreen finished with five kills each.
