Neal Brown fired: 5 West Virginia football head coach candidates

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. (BVM) – The West Virginia Mountaineers have fired head coach Neal Brown following six seasons in Morgantown where he went 37-35 overall.

The Mountaineers hovered around .500 in five of Brown’s six seasons at the helm outside of a 2023 campaign where West Virginia went 9-4 and capped the year with a win in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. The strong season earned Brown a contract extension and led to high expectations for the 2024 campaign.

West Virginia failed to meet those, going just 6-6 in the regular season while finishing in the middle of the pack in the Big 12. An ugly 52-15 loss in the Mountaineers’ regular-season finale against Texas Tech ultimately signaled the end of Brown’s tenure in Morgantown. Offensive coordinator Chad Scott will serve as the Mountaineers’ interim head coach for the remainder of the 2024 season.

West Virginia now begins the search for its 36th head coach in program history and several notable names could be involved. Here are five West Virginia football head coach candidates following Brown’s firing.
