Fun and safety on our Steamboat Springs trails system
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. — Our local trail system is one of the community’s greatest assets. It provides endless recreational opportunities and commuters with safe and scenic routes throughout Steamboat Springs.
Some of the best things about the Yampa Valley include being outside, seeing our friends and neighbors, and getting around town using various methods.
As spring and summer heat up and our local trails become busier, we ask that you help keep everyone safe by following the trail rules and practicing proper trail etiquette.
Share the Trail—Do not block the trail; move to the side when stopping to allow others to pass. Be courteous to all.
Stay in Control—Adhere to the posted speed limit (15 MPH on the Yampa River Core Trail, 10 MPH on Sailors Way and Butcherknife Trail, etc.) and always stay in control.
Announce When Passing – Avoid collisions by making your presence known and announcing when you plan to pass. Proceed by assuming the person didn’t hear you as they might have hearing loss or headphones in.
Stay Right, Pass Left – Just like driving, stick to the right side of the trail, only moving to the left when you need to pass. Always watch for oncoming traffic, too!
Keep Dogs on Leash – To avoid injury to you or your pet, keep dogs on a leash unless you travel through an off-leash area (Sailors Way and Butcherknife Trail are the only designated off-lease trails within city limits).
Wear Protective Equipment – Always wear protective equipment. As a reminder, children 15 years and younger are required by law to wear a helmet when biking, skateboarding, etc.
Leave No Trace—Properly dispose of trash in receptacles located along the trail and/or at trailheads to keep trash off the trails and out of our local streams and rivers.
E-Bike Access – As a reminder, only Class 1 and Class 2 E-Bikes are permitted on the Yampa River Core Trail, Walton Creek Trail, and several neighborhood/connector trails. E-bikes are not allowed on the Emerald Mountain or Spring Creek singletrack trails unless they are being used as a reasonable accommodation under the Americans with Disabilities Act.
