Former Lyndon Institute ace Buddy Lamothe honored by VPA

LYNDON, Vt. (BVM) — Buddy Lamothe was a three-sport athlete at Lyndon Institute. In 2011, the standout baseball pitcher was gearing up for the MLB’s Amateur Draft when an accident shook up his future plans. More than a decade since he last toed the rubber on a high school diamond, Lamothe will be honored for his efforts on the field with an induction into the Vermont Principals’ Association (VPA) Hall of Fame next year.

In 2009, the Lyndonville native was an ace for the Vikings, as the team went on to win the Division II state championship. In his senior season, Lamothe had a 7-0 record, a .028 ERA, while striking out just above 15 batters per game. Lamothe’s impact on the field helped his team go undefeated on their way to the state title victory.

Other than being an accomplished baseball player, Lamothe spent time playing for the football and hockey teams at Lyndon Institute. Being a three-star athlete attracted the attention of college programs. Lamothe decided to attend San Jacinto College in Texas to play NJCAA baseball.

Lamothe’s life would change as a sophomore at San Jac. He was having a great season as the Gators’ top reliever, posting a 0.86 ERA. In 23 1/3 innings pitched, he was able to strikeout 28 batters, leading his team to a top 15 rank nationally.

However, in May 2011, Lamothe was involved in a swimming accident that left him paralyzed from the waist down. Unfortunately, the accident would finish his playing career on the diamond, as doctors at the time said he only had a five-percent chance to walk again.

With the MLB Amateur Draft just a month away from the accident, the Houston Astros still decided to select Lamothe with their pick in the 40th round to help Lamothe realize his dream of being a professional ballplayer.

In 2013, Lamothe was honored by throwing out the first pitch in Lyndon Institute’s home game against the Montpelier Solons. Buddy has since returned to the Vikings baseball program as a fellow assistant coach alongside his father, Joe.

Lamothe will be inducted with 11 other members into the VPA Hall of Fame on May 14, 2021 after COVID-19 pushed back the ceremony twice in 2020. His impact on the baseball diamond with Lyndon Institute will forever be cemented.
