Tabor Academy’s Barry wins back-to-back Gatorade MA Player of the Year awards

MARION, Mass. (BVM) — Cat Barry has left her mark on the Tabor Academy soccer program. After bringing home the Gatorade Massachusetts Girls Soccer Player of the Year award last year, Barry followed that up with another honor this year.

In her junior season, Barry scored 33 goals, had 11 assists and helped lead the Seawolves to a 15-2-2 record. Locked in as the No. 4 seed in the NEPSAC tournament, Barry and Tabor Academy would go on to make a state title run, beating Thayer Academy for the NEPSAC Class B title, 4-3.

During her senior season, the 6-foot forward finished with 27 goals and 12 assists. Barry helped lead Tabor to a 12-5-3 record in Class A.

Opposing coaches from the past two seasons talked about some of the things that make the two-time United Soccer Coaches All-American so difficult to defend in a Gatorade press release.

“Cat was so dominant,” Milton Academy coach Peter Kahn said. “She scored a ton of goals even though everyone was keying on her defensively.”

“Cat can dominate a field whenever she wants,” Rivers School coach Susanna Donahue said. “Her size, strength and speed made her an incredibly effective player at whatever position [Tabor] put her in.”

The two-time Gatorade State Player of the Year winner was not only recognized for her ability on the soccer field, but also the work she does off it. Barry spends her off-time as a youth soccer coach and helps teach English to recent immigrants. Gatorade acknowledged her extra work outside the sport and in the classroom, where she maintained an A-minus average.

Barry finished her high school career with 88 goals and 44 assists. She is the Seawolves’ all-time leader in goals scored, shattering the previous record of 40. After wrapping up her final season with Tabor, Barry would go on to play on the U-20 U.S. Women’s National Team.

Her impact on the soccer field led her to becoming the 17th-ranked girls soccer player in the nation, where she received offers from some of the top Division I programs in the country. The Tabor Academy graduate decided to commit to the University of South Carolina where she looks to bring some of the same energy next year on the pitch.

Last year the Gamecocks’ women’s soccer team made it to the Elite Eight before an overtime loss against Washington State that would have sent them to the Final Four. Barry will look to help out the 19-2-3 South Carolina Gamecocks next season.
