The Owls will soar in 2021, Sanders headed to Boca Raton

BOCA RATON, Fla. (BVM) — Florida Atlantic University head football coach Willie Taggart will be navigating the Owls for the first time this coming fall. After being let go by the Florida State Seminoles midseason of 2019, he wasn’t on the job hunt very long. With the reputation he’s built for himself, FAU came calling quickly.

And it looks like they’ve made the right choice, as Taggart just got a commitment from NFL legend Deion “Prime Time” Sanders’ son, Shedeur Sanders. This marks the first time FAU has landed a top 300 player since ESPN started their ranking system in 2009.

Although Shedeur Sanders is the son of a Pro Football Hall of Famer, he’s a stellar up-and-comer himself, looking to pave his own path. Sanders is a four-star prospect, ranked the No. 14 quarterback recruit across the nation. The pro-style QB out of Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas passed for 3,459 yards as a junior to go along with 47 touchdowns. With his feet, Sanders produced another 11 trips to the end zone.

And now FAU will reap the benefits of their urgency in the recruiting process. The Owls were the first team to offer him the opportunity to play at the next level, which Sanders has noted to multiple news sources was a major player in his choice. He made his decision official via a star-studded announcement video.

The video featured NFL star Tom Brady, retired hall of famer Brett Favre, defensive back Jalen Ramsey, rapper Snoop Dogg, and a handful of comedians and others close to the prospect. They all prompted the same question, “Where you going 2?” referring to his jersey number at Trinity Christian.

This summer, Sanders has been working out with new Tampa Bay Buccaneers signal caller Tom Brady. Brady, one of the winningest NFL players of all time, will certainly provide Sanders with elite mentoring to help impact the Owls upon his graduation. With one year of high school left for Sanders, FAU will hope to remain relevant this season without him, as they are coming off a Sun Belt Conference championship.

When the Owls do get Sanders, he will bring with him a championship mindset. In his two years at Trinity Christian, he has led them to a 27-1 record, along with back-to-back Texas state championships.
