Top prospect Williams leaving San Ysidro for Lake Norman Christian

HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (BVM) — Coming off of a 2019-20 season in which it finished 31-2 en route to a CSAA state championship, the Lake Norman Christian School boys basketball team seemed to have reached its ceiling. But head coach Mason Padgett and the Storm could be even better this year.

MaxPreps national Freshman Boys Basketball Player of the Year Mikey Williams is leaving San Diego’s San Ysidro High School to join the Storm this coming season.

Williams, who at 16 years old is already being considered to be a top NBA draft pick when his time comes, had a prolific inaugural high school season. For the Cougars, the 6-foot-3 phenom averaged 29.9 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.9 assists.

Known for his highlight-making abilities, Williams scored in bunches all season long. In an Imperial Valley tournament game, the uber-athletic guard tossed in 77 points, setting the San Diego Section record. He also had game-high totals of 50 and 41 points.

He already holds offers from former NBA superstar Penny Hardaway at Memphis and legendary Kansas coach Bill Self, but Williams has expressed interest in taking the route of attending a historically black college or university (HBCU).

With Class of 2020 top prospect Makur Maker committing to HBCU Howard University and former Purdue University standout Nojel Eastern also transferring to Howard, the idea of Williams going to one of those schools seems more likely.

Williams has already narrowed his list down to 10 schools, and it includes five HBCUs alongside five traditional universities. The HBCUs include Hampton, Tennessee State, Alabama State, Texas Southern and North Carolina Central.

With a long way to go before attending any of these schools, Williams will gear up for his sophomore season at Lake Norman Christian. With the California high school basketball season up in the air due to COVID-19, Williams decided the Storm would be his best suitor. North Carolina high school basketball is slated to start on January 4, a little later than normal, but it guarantees a season for the sophomore star.

The Storm will be transitioning to the NCISAA 2A level this season. Their season opener will be against the Comenius Knights out of South Mill, S.C.
