UNO basketball prepared to return for winter season
OMAHA, Neb. (BVM) — While the University of Nebraska Omaha has postponed fall sports until winter, it is optimistic about winter sports. The UNO basketball teams have not yet released a schedule, but they’re expected to return with every other NCAA basketball team in November.
The UNO Mavericks don’t get as much love as the neighboring teams within the state of Nebraska like Creighton and the Huskers in Lincoln, but they still get support and that support is growing. The Mavericks were just one game away from making the NCAA Tournament back in 2018. They were runner-up that year in the Summit League Conference Championship as they lost narrowly to North Dakota State. The Mavericks finished 16-16 last season.
Because this year’s team will have only two seniors and more underclassmen than upperclassmen on the roster, the expectations for this season are uncertain, but the future seems bright. The Mavericks have many local recruits who will be excited to play for the city of Omaha.
Derrin Hansen enters his 16th season as the Omaha men’s basketball head coach having compiled a record of 243-215 in his career. Hansen was also the 2019 Summit League Coach of the Year.
As this season is still somewhat uncertain and the expectations of the Mavericks are as well, Coach Hansen and the Mavericks will use what they are given and compete to the best of their ability and prepare for this winter.
