Adena continues to grow in the Ohio HS Clay Target League

FRANKFORT, Ohio — Three years ago, the Ohio High School Clay Target League was formed and Adena High School has been part of the league since the beginning. The league is currently made up of 16 teams divided into 3 conferences. Teams are placed in a conference based on the size of the team. When the league started there were 75 kids, last year the league had 150 kids, and this year the league doubled in size to 300 kids.

The trap shooting season runs from April to May with a state tournament in June and Nationals following in July. The state tournament is a 1-day event that is open to any team with at least 5 members. The National Championship is a 3-day event. Day 1 is individuals, Day 2 is teams, and Day 3 is finals based on qualifying from Days 1 and 2. During the season, teams shoot two times a week. Individuals shoot 2 rounds of 25 clay targets from 5 different positions. Scores are turned in online and the league keeps track of scores and standings.

Adena holds its weekly shooting at Mid State Gun Club in Frankfort, Ohio. The League isn’t an official school sport, but a club sport. This allows teams to receive donations from sponsors and local businesses. Adena’s team has been able to cover league fees and provide some equipment for the team through business donations. Assistant coach Kirk Kellis said gun safety is one of the most important things they teach. It is important that team members learn about guns and are comfortable in any situation which might come up.

Adena High School has had success and seen growth all three years. During the first year, Adena finished third in the conference and took fourth at state. Last year, Adena finished first in the conference and claimed third at state, while team member Hannah Skinner won a scholarship. This year, Adena is currently sitting at third in the conference and is hoping for a win at state on June 15th. This year Adena started the season with 14 team members, including five girls. Head coach Ron Preston and assistant coaches Kirk Kellis and Gary Timmons are excited with what their team has achieved and are looking forward to what the future holds.
