Dwight Morrow dominates Memorial, 48-3
WEST NEW YORK, N.J. – (BVM) After a two-week Covid-19 quarantine, the (3-0) Memorial Tigers returned to the field in a non-conference matchup with the (4-1) Dwight Morrow Maroon Raiders. The Maroon Raiders came into this game with a three-game winning streak, hoping to add another W to their record.
With each team on a rebuild from last year and off to hot starts this season, the expectations were running high on both sidelines.
The Maroon Raiders are bouncing back from a 2019, 3-6 finish, fifth in the SCF Patriot Gold Division.
The 2019 Tigers finished 1-8, sixth in the SFC-Liberty White Division.
Thursday night’s game began with a Memorial first down fumble at their own 25-yard line, recovered by Dwight Morrow.
Looking as though it would be that kind of start for the Tigers, the Maroon Raiders were held at the 25 for all 4 downs by the Memorial defense.
On the next drive, the Tiger run game appeared solid, as they marched downfield to the opposing 10-yard line, ultimately settling for a field goal. These happened to be the only points scored by Memorial all night.
Dwight Morrow was held scoreless through the 1st quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Maroon Raider QB, Jalen Hoyle, kept it at the 3-yard line, and ran it into the endzone for the first touchdown of the game. Hoyle followed with the 2-point conversion as well.
This set the pace for the rest of the game. In the air and on the ground, Hoyle, the 6-foot-2, 190-pound senior and Virginia Tech commit, had a stellar performance.
Hoyle scored the second touchdown of the quarter, and Keenan Cheek, the 2-pt conversion.
On their next drive, with under three minutes left in the first half, Hoyle launched a 30-yard fourth down pass to Ronald Thomas, who walked it right into the endzone. Elijah Pitts ran in the 2-pt conversion.
The second quarter ended with a Dwight Morrow interception, by Thomas, with 28 seconds remaining in the half.
Half time 24- 3.
Dwight Morrow had the ball to start the third quarter. A second down 40-yard pass from Hoyle to Thomas added the Maroon Raiders fourth touchdown of the night. Jubari Stevens ran in the 2-pt. conversion.
The Maroon Raiders would close out the third quarter with another touchdown pass to Stevens in the endzone and 2pt conversion run by Pitts.
Early in the 4th quarter, back up QB Tristen Dreher ran in his own TD, and handed off to Pitts for another 2pt. conversion, the last scores of the night.
Hoyle finished the night with seven completions for 178 yards, and three TDs. Senior Ronald Thomas had four catches for 110 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception. On the defensive end, Georgetown University commit Veron Garrison had 12 tackles and four sacks.
Dwight Morrow head coach, Joe Hoyle, was happy with the win and said, “overall our team played tough and we are getting better each week.”
Rodriguez led the Tigers with 59 rushing yards and six tackles. Donoso had 25 rushing yards and five tackles for the night.
Prior to tonight’s matchup, Memorial had averaged 29.3 points per game this season.
Memorial Assistant Coach H. Abdelmaksoud felt that, “the rhythm wasn’t quite there tonight,” and said, “the two weeks off without practice didn’t help.”
