Top 5 teams in the SEC after Week 10

COLLEGE STATION, Texas (BVM) —It was an exciting weekend of SEC football. Rivals faced off, and plenty of points were scored. Now, as the race for Atlanta continues, it’s sure to be an electrifying finish in one of football’s greatest conferences.

  1. Ole Miss (4-4, beat Mississippi State 31-24)

Scoring 21 first-half points, the Ole Miss Rebels defeated Mississippi State in the 117th Egg Bowl. Both teams went scoreless in the third quarter, but both squads put on an entertaining fourth quarter, scoring a combined 20 points. Matt Corral threw for 385 yards, two touchdowns and completed 67% of his passes. His main target was Elijah Moore. He hauled in 12 receptions for 139 yards. Moore even completed one pass in the rivalry game. To go along with his impressive performance, Moore broke A.J. Brown’s single-season receptions record. Overall, a very impressive win for the Rebels as they move into the top five.

For now, the Rebels will sit at .500 until their matchup with LSU (3-4) is rescheduled. The game was supposed to be played this weekend, but LSU has a matchup with Alabama instead. It will be the Rebels’ third bye week in five weeks because of the recent shakeup.

  1. No. 9 Georgia (6-2, beat South Carolina 45-16)

Another stellar performance from the Georgia Bulldogs. With the Bulldogs playing at a high level, fans may wonder why hasn’t JT Daniels played sooner. Daniels threw for 139 yards, two TDs and completed 63% of his passes. To go along with the passing game, Georgia’s rushing attack also showed signs of life. Led by Zamir White and James Cook, both running backs combined for 188 yards and four TDs.

The Bulldogs will host Vanderbilt (0-8) this Saturday in Athens.

  1. No. 5 Texas A&M (6-1, beat LSU 20-7)

Not an overly impressive effort by Jimbo Fisher’s squad, but they still got the job done. Quarterback Kellen Mond took a step back, completing 33% of his passes, and threw for 105 yards. Lucky enough for the Aggies, Isaiah Spiller led the rushing attack with 141 yards, one TD and averaged 5.2 yards a carry. It’s not all on Mond, but he’ll have to play better if the Aggies want a chance to get into the College Football Playoff.

This weekend, the Texas A&M Aggies travel to Jordan-Hare Stadium for an exciting matchup against the Auburn Tigers (5-3) and look to stay in the playoff race.

  1. No. 6 Florida (7-1, beat Kentucky 34-10)

The Gators continued their winning ways with a so-so performance against Kentucky. Leading 14-10 at halftime, the Gators went on to score 20 unanswered points. Continuing to lead the way was Heisman Trophy candidate Kyle Trask. He finished with 256 yards, three TDs and completed 78% of his passes. Tight End Kyle Pitts caught five of those passes and caught all three touchdown passes. Pitts finished with 99 total yards on the day.

Up next for the Gators are the Tennessee Volunteers, who sit at 2-5. Their game was postponed, so they’ll be coming off a week of rest and preparation. Look for the Vols to give the Gators all they can handle, but the Gators and Trask should come out top.

  1. No. 1 Alabama (8-0, beat Auburn 42-13)

With head coach Nick Saban at home with COVID-19, offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian took over head coaching duties. The Crimson Tide still went out onto the field and dominated. Quarterback Mac Jones threw for 302 yards, five TDs, and completed 69% of his passes. Along with Jones’ performance, wide receiver DeVonta Smith hauled in seven catches for 171 yards. He also caught two TDs. Running back, Najee Harris rushed for nearly 100 yards and scored once.

As the Crimson Tide continue their march to Atlanta, they will travel to Baton Rouge to take on the LSU Tigers (3-4). In what has been an exciting matchup over the past couple of years, Alabama is in a prime spot to roll the Tigers this Saturday.
