Get to know SXU Cougars freshman libero Mason Nafziger
CHICAGO — Recent Central Catholic alum Mason Nafziger moved to Chicago at the start of the school year to join St. Xavier University’s men’s volleyball team.
Mason is a Freshman on the St. Xavier University SXU men’s volleyball, Uno 18 Elite Club Volleyball. He has been playing volleyball ever since he was 10, but was familiar with the sport all the way back to his toddler years. You may get a glimpse of his skills here locally from time to time as he subs on his dad’s sand league at Gill Street Sports Bar in the summers.
What are some of the most memorable wins you’ve had?
“Winning a bid and going 6-0 at the Winter Classic in Chicago this year.
Beating Arizona Fear in 3 sets, who we originally lost to in the California qualifier.”
As an athlete, what is a rule you live by?
“Always put the next athlete first and stay strong as a team. Focus on what you can do better, but never fault someone for the mistakes a team all makes together.”
What’s the best piece of advice you received from a coach or mentor?
“Volleyball is 80 percent mental, and it shows in the game. You can never receive success without hard work being put in place.”
Describe a mistake you made while competing and how you overcame it.
“Getting angry when losing a game, and slowly becoming selfish in my own mistakes.”
Do you have a pre-game ritual? Do you have a favorite pre-game song to listen to?
“Listening to pump-up music can put me in the best mood. My favorite song would have to be ‘Higher’ by The Score. It’s definitely the best song to get pumped up to.”
What do you like to do when you’re not playing your sport?
“Watch volleyball, be with my friends and family, sleep.”
What’s your favorite snack food?
“Cheez-its”
If someone in your family chose one word to describe you, who would you pick and what word would they use? Why?
“My mother would say I’m driven and charismatic.”
How would you describe your personality?
“I’m considered to be outgoing and understanding. I love being a social butterfly, but am shy when it comes to meeting new people.”
When you close your eyes and dream about your future, what does that look like?
“Being successful in the medical field, and possibly going pro for volleyball. We’ll have to see what decisions I have that can make that dream come true.”
Congratulations Mason on your volleyball successes so far! We wish you continued success at St. Xavier University!
