Starkville native will be suiting up for the team he grew up rooting against

STARKVILLE, Miss. (BVM) — With the college football season shortened due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Lane Kiffin and the Ole Miss Rebels have found their quarterback for the future.

Earlier this year, four-star recruit Luke Altmyer verbally committed to Florida State University. Just 10 months after committing to the Seminole program, he announced that he would be decommitting from FSU and would reopen his commitment via his Twitter.

“I would like to thank Coach Norvell and his staff for believing in me. They gave me confidence to work harder and become [a] better player and person,” Altmyer said. “I would like to thank all of Seminole Nation for their consistent love and enthusiasm towards me.

But due to unforeseen circumstances that have led to a very difficult recruiting process, I have decided to decommit from Florida State. I know their football program will do great things in the future.”

Ranked No. 166 in ESPN’s Top 300 for the Class of 2021, it wouldn’t take long for Altmyer to find a new home.

Just four days after announcing his recruiting was back open, Altmyer would ultimately decide to stay in Mississippi.

But it wasn’t the decision everyone thought he would make. Playing at Starkville High School, one would think he would have decided to go for play under Mike Leach and his pass-heavy offense. But Altmyer is heading to Mississippi States’ in-state rival, Ole Miss. He isn’t the first Yellow Jacket to head to Oxford.

Altmyer threw for 37 touchdowns, 3,093 yards, and completed 67% of his passes in his junior year. And now, after a shorter season due to the pandemic, Altmyer has capped off his senior year with a 6-3 overall record.

With his high school football career now behind him, he’ll begin preparing for competition at the collegiate level.

“Growing up a Mississippi State fan, I never saw myself in the Red and Blue and being a Rebel,” Altmyer said in an interview with Rivals. “It’s always been a dream to play on Saturday in the SEC. [I’m] just really excited for the future.”
