TCU defensive back declares for NFL Draft

FORT WORTH, Texas (BVM)— On Jan. 2, TCU Horned Frogs free safety Trevon Moehrig announced on Twitter he will be entering the 2021 NFL Draft.

“Ever since I was a kid, I dreamed of playing in the NFL, and taking care of the ones I love most,” said Moehrig in a statement released on Twitter. “After much prayer, thought, and talking with family, I’ve decided that it is best for me to forgo my senior season and enter the 2021 NFL Draft.”

Moehrig was only a three-star prospect in his recruiting class coming out of Smithson Valley High School and switched time between receiver and cornerback. He received interest from many notable Power Five colleges but ultimately chose TCU as his college destination after an unofficial visit in April of 2017. He was only a junior at the time, and many offers from notable schools continued to come, but he stayed faithful to TCU.

Following his high school playing days, Moehrig saw time on the field, mostly returning punts during his freshman season. But he started to gain national attention during his sophomore year when he was given a chance to start on defense as a free safety. There, he solidified himself as a defensive force putting up 62 total tackles, 11 passes defended, and four interceptions.

Then, during his junior season, Moehrig’s draft stock rose considerably after a solid 2020 season that included 47 total tackles, 10 passes defended, and two interceptions. The most notable aspect of his game is his size, combined with excellent athleticism. He uses these abilities to be a problem for quarterbacks and wide receivers looking to try a deep ball.

With his outstanding play during this past season, he was also awarded the Jim Thorpe Award. With this award, Moehrig became the first player in TCU history to win the award and the first player from the Big 12 Conference to win it since 2006. Moehrig is also just the seventh player in school history to win a nationally recognized award. The most recent receipt was Trevone Boykin, who won the 2014 Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award.

Moehrig finished his TCU career with 124 total tackles, 21 passes defended, and seven interceptions. At 6-foot-2, 202 pounds, he was a standout force in every season he played for TCU. He has tremendous athletic ability and outstanding speed.

Moehrig is also a two-time 1st Team All-Big 12 and was given All American honors. Now, the Spring Branch native will prepare for the upcoming NFL draft, where he is projected to be a potential first-round pick, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr.

So far, Moehrig is the only Horned Frog to declare for the 2021 NFL Draft. There was not a safety chosen in the first round of last year’s NFL draft, but Moehrig will aim to change that this year. And whether or not he is selected in the first round or the last round, Moehrig will strive to make an immediate impact at the professional level.
