Lasers Wyatt Sihoven on brink of home run history

NEWTON, Mass. (BVM) — Wyatt Sihoven is getting ready for what will be counted as his third season in the blue and white, but he is on the brink of making history.  He is sitting just one home run back from tying the great Conor Cavanuagh (09-12) for the most home runs hit in a career by a Lasell Laser.  Two Lasers have come close with six each, Brandon Valentin (14-17) and Dom Mascolo (15-18), but fell just short.

Freshman year was a crazy one for Sihoven.  For the first 18 games of the season, Sihoven bounced between the bench and late-game fill in.  After the second start in a doubleheader against Johnson and Wales, he found a spot in the lineup every day.  In the final 12 games, he started in 11.  He did have a two-homer game against Anna Maria to get himself on the board and on the list of Lasell home run hitters which is filled with many greats.

His sophomore season saw Sihoven earn a spot in the everyday lineup with a couple of maintenance days in there.  He played 37 of 40 games and proved why he deserved a spot.  He wasn’t the greatest hitter, but he never took anything for granted.  He made play after play going hard for every ball as the teams starting shortstop, one of the toughest positions to play on the diamond.  He also continued his yearly home run average of two, adding two on with homers against Lesley, which was also his second multi-homer game.

Junior year was full of promise for Sihoven.  He came out flying in the five-game shortened season.  After the previous team’s leadoff hitter Evan Michalek graduated, it left a hole that was primed for the former No. 9 hitter to fill in.  Sihoven went on to have a team-high .462 batting average and was on pace for his season average of two homers. He was well on his way to tying or even breaking the home run record, but COVID-19 said otherwise.

He now has at least one more year left with Lasell. He has the fourth-year option to take during grad school but it is in the unknown. Lasell is on track to play. If Sihoven remains the team’s leadoff hitter, he will be primed for the most chances to go and get that record. It takes only two swings, but the ball has to travel far.  Sihoven has proven he has the power to do it.  Now it is his time to go and grab it and becomes Lasell’s home run king.
