Mac Bredahl looks to continue success for Tufts lacrosse

Tufts University men’s lacrosse is coming off a spectacular year with the help of their star attackman Mac Bredahl.

The junior sensation led the New England Small College Athletic Conference in lacrosse last year, scoring a total of 27 points in the four games Tufts played and was named Inside Lacrosse 2020 DIII Breakout Player of the Year. In his freshman season, he managed to put up 12 points with a limited amount of playing time in 10 games.

Going into Tufts, Bredahl was coming out of Chatham High School in Chatham, N.J. as the No. 32 high school lacrosse recruit in the country. Although he knew he was extremely talented, he understood that Tufts had three senior attackmen on the team while he was entering his freshman year.

“You obviously always want to play, but I understood those guys have proved themselves time and time again”, Bredahl said.

While only playing a limited amount of minutes, Bredahl still managed to score four goals and eight assists.

“I knew I was doing the right things and I learned a lot from the guys who were in front of me out on the field,” Bredahl added.

During the transition into his sophomore year, Bredahl spent a great deal of time getting bigger and stronger which he said “definitely helped me jump to the next level.” Bredahl also said that being bigger made him become more confident in himself as a player. Once his sophomore year arrived, the seniors ahead of him had graduated and the starting position at attack became his, and he made the most of it.

In the 2019-2020 season, Bredahl’s performance was as good as can be. He scored 10 goals and 17 assists in helping the Jumbos go undefeated for the season.

“I was definitely happy with the way I played, but it’s not something I really think about,” Bredahl said. “Whatever I can do to help the team win is what matters to me. If I score two points or 15 points in a game, it doesn’t matter to me as long as we get the win.”

Bredahl credits his competitiveness as one reason why he has become successful in lacrosse.

“I am a very competitive person in every part of my life,” he said.

Growing up, Bredahl played almost every sport and had success at each one. Bredahl happens to be a scratch golfer and plays at the No. 2 position on the Tufts team. In high school, he was the leading point scorer in both basketball and lacrosse in his senior year and had multiple 100-plus point seasons in lacrosse. In his senior year at Chatham, his team beat Delbarton in lacrosse when Delbarton was ranked third in the country and Bredahl managed to score nine points in that game.

“He’s special in that way; he’s one of the most competitive people that I have ever come into contact with,” Tufts head coach Casey D’Annolfo said. “He could be the best player ever to play at Tufts.”

There are lots of high expectations for Bredahl coming into this new season. US Lacrosse Magazine has named him preseason player of the year.

“It’s great to hear, but I have to just keep doing what I’m doing in order to help out the team,” Bredahl said. “It takes a lot of hard work and confidence as a unit to be successful out here.”

As long as Bredahl’s confidence continues, more highlight reel results should be expected from him in his third season with the Jumbos.
