Tod Kowalcyzk eyes a deep run in the MAC Tournament after Toledo’s hot start

TOLEDO, Ohio (BVM) — During his tenure at the University of Toledo, Tod Kowalczyk has turned the men’s basketball program into one of the best in the Mid-American Conference (MAC) over the past decade.

The 2020-21 season marks Kowalczyk’s 11th year as Toledo’s men’s basketball coach which began back in 2010.

Outside of his first season with Toledo, Kowalczyk has produced a winning record every year, with four of them being 20win seasons. One of them included a school record 27 wins in 2013-14.

Under Kowalczyk, Toledo has earned four MAC West division titles and two berths in the MAC championship game. Kowalczyk has yet to earn the MAC championship title, but the team is headed in the right direction with a 16-5 record (11-2 in MAC).

This places them in first place in the MAC West Division.

Without counting his first season at Toledo, Kowalczyk has produced eight straight seasons with at least a .500 record or better.

The Rockets are also again on pace to reach the 20win mark this season.

This would be Kowalczyk’s fifth time doing so at Toledo and seventh time doing it during his head coaching career.

Before coaching at Toledo, Kowalczyk was an assistant coach for five different institutions, most notably at Marquette University from 2000 to 2002, where he worked with Dwyane Wade during that time.

During his final season there, Marquette would make the NCAA Tournament and advance to the Final Four. He would then get his first head coaching opportunity at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay.

During his eight years there, he turned that program around, where he went from only winning 10 games his first year to 17 his second year. During his last two years there, he led the Phoenix to back-to-back 20-win seasons and a berth in the College Basketball Invitational (CBI).

Kowalczyk has tallied 200 wins during his reign at Toledo, which places him third all-time in Toledo’s history behind Stan Joplin (203 wins), and Bob Nichols (376 wins).
