Mamaroneck boys soccer Section 1 champions Q&A

MAMARONECK, N.Y. — After coming off a strong and impressive season in 2019, the Mamaroneck boys Varsity Soccer team set out to redeem themselves after losing in the sectional finals last year. They worked day in and day out with the ultimate goal of bringing home the title. They were able to cap off their undefeated season with a big win against White Plains to award them the Southern Westchester large school title. Senior captains James Jogis and JM Decaux played a huge role in securing this big win for the program. We spoke with them to find out their thoughts on the season.
Q. What contributed to the team’s success this year?
A. A lot of things contributed to the team’s success this fall. I think our team chemistry really helped us thrive. Most of us have been playing together for years so we knew each other very well. Because of that we played to each other’s strengths and saw a lot of success that way. Also Coach Becker and Coach Mangan did a great job coaching all of us tactically, most of our success I’d say is because of them. – James Jogis
Q. What were the challenges faced during your season due to covid?
A. Because of Covid we had to wear masks at all times while playing and practicing which took some time to adjust to. We also had some key players quarantined a handful of times during the season as well. – JM Decaux
Q. What was a memorable moment from this season?
A. Definitely winning the large school regional final. It meant a lot to all of us seniors as we lost in the section final the previous year. It was a great feeling to have all of our hard work pay off and lift the plaque together on our home field. – JM Decaux
Q. What will you miss most about this team?
A. I’ll miss competing with my teammates the most. I’ve played with a few of the guys on the team since I was 8. We’ve grown up together playing soccer so I’ll miss playing with them a lot. – James Jogis
