Clemson women’s tennis falls to No. 6 Duke Blue Devils

CLEMSON, S.C. (BVM) – No. 6 Duke defeated the Clemson women’s tennis team Sunday afternoon 6-1. For doubles on court one, the Duke tandem of Meible Chi and Margaryta Bilokin defeated the Clemson duo of Eleni Louka and Jenna Thompson 6-3. At court two, the Duke pair of Chloe Beck and Karolina Berankova defeated the Tiger tandem of Cristina Mayorova and Mackenzy Middlebrooks 6-4. Lastly, the Duke duo of Kelly Chen and Georgia Drummy beat the Tiger team of Ali Despain and Laura Marti 6-3. 

In singles play, Duke secured wins on all but one court. Duke’s Kelly Chen, Georgia Drummy, and Chloe Beck defeated Clemson’s Eleni Louka, Jenna Thompson and Cristina Mayorova on courts one, two, and three. On court four, Duke’s Meible Chi defeated Clemson’s Mackenzy Middlebrooks 6-0 in the first set. Middlebrooks was able to put up a stronger fight in the second set however Duke still secured the victory 6-4. On court 5, Clemson’s Ali Depsain  was defeated by Duke’s Margaryta Bilokin 6-1 in the first set and 6-4 in the second set. Lastly, on court six Duke’s Karolina Berkanova won the first set 6-3, but Clemson’s Lana Sipek came back to win the second 6-2. In overtime, Sipek secured the win 10-7. This was Sipek’s second career match against a top 125 opponent, and the first ranked win of her career.

“I came into the match confident and I believed that I could win,” she said. “I knew after Friday that I needed to step up a little bit more and I’m excited that I was able to pull out the win.”

The final score of the match was Duke, 6, Clemson, 1. Duke’s overall record is 10-2 with an ACC record of 5-1. The Tigers have an overall record of 6-10 and ACC record of 0-7, and take on No. 28 Furman University on Wednesday. The first serve is slated for 3 p.m.
