Normal Community boys and girls basketball are Big 12 conference champions

NORMAL, Ill. — It was defense that helped the Normal Community High School boys secure their 52-39 win over Champaign Centennial in the Big 12 Conference Tournament this weekend led by coach Dave Witzig. With the absence of a State Tournament this year, the Conference Tournaments carried a little more weight than in years past as teams showcased their talents and played for bragging rights in the only tournament they could win this year. The Ironmen finished the season 12-5 and are already looking ahead to next season. Witzig is only losing two seniors, Jacob Janssen and Justin Potts. The team is excited for what’s to come with most of their players returning including juniors, Zach Cleveland, Trey Redd, and Tyler Dwinal and sophomore Robert Brent leading the way next season.

The NCHS girls brought home their own bragging rights as well. The girls went into their tournament with only two losses, one of which was to Danville earlier in the season. They did not have their full team at that game due to COVID, so they wanted a second shot at beating them. And that they did. Dave Feeney coached his team to the Big 12 Title over Danville with a winning score of 45-27. NCHS led by double digits nearly the whole game due in part to the double double efforts of Ivie Juarez (12 points, 10 rebounds) and Karleigh Creasey (10 points, 10 rebounds. It was a “family win” for coach Feeney and his daughters, senior Madison Feeney and sophomore Sophia.

Congratulations to both teams! Big 12 Conference Champions!
