Verona Area Wildcats make it to WIAA state

VERONA, Wis. (BVM) — VAHS winter sports was able to kick-off its season in 2021. Despite having a late start and shortened season compared to their competitors, several Wildcat teams made an appearance at state!

Verona Sports Monthly would like to honor and congratulate the teams and all the athletes! Everyone’s a winner as they championed through this past year. From training as individuals to making the most of zoom practices and following precautions, all the players made it through. It wasn’t easy that’s for sure. However, it was a sweet victory to overcome the odds and finally get the green light to return to the gym, ice, or pool.

The Wildcat girls basketball team made it to the WIAA Girls State Basketball tourney held in La Crosse. After an 8-5 season, the girls gave it their best shot against Germantown.

Wildcat Hockey made another bid at state this year. The 2020 State Champs beat University School 5-1 in the semi-final. For their next match-up, the Wildcats faced off against Hudson and ended up winning the silver trophy.

Several swimmers from the boy’s varsity swim team brought home medals at their state meet.. Junior Oscar Best got 3rd in the 100-yard butterfly. The relay team got 2nd in the 200 freestyle thanks to swimmers Luke Bennin, Nathan Rozeboom, Max McCartney, and Oscar Best. Junior Nathan Rozeboom medaled 4th place in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The Verona/Edgewood gymnastics team competed in the WIAA State Gymnastics meet and earned the 5th place title.

Congratulations Wildcats!
