Gonzaga takes down TCU in extra innings

FORT WORTH, TEXAS (BVM) —On March 14, the final game of a three-game series between the Gonzaga Bulldogs and TCU Horned Frogs took place at Lupton Baseball Stadium in Fort Worth, TX.

These teams have met six times before this game, with TCU holding the edge, winning four of the six games.

Going into the game, Gonzaga took the first matchup in a high-scoring 13-8 game. The Frogs bounced back to win 7-1 in the second game in a solid performance both hitting and pitching.

Austin Krob started on the mound for the Frogs, while Alec Goez started on the mound for the Bulldogs. On a windy day in Fort Worth, it was important for both pitchers to keep the ball low.

The last two games between the two teams proved to be high-scoring, and this game proved to be no different.

The game began scoreless through the first inning until Gabriel Hughes blasted a home run to center field to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead. TCU tied the game in the same inning with an RBI single from Gray Rodgers.

After this, the game began to open up.

Gonzaga put up three runs in the third inning as the first three batters got on base. Brett Harris and Andrew Orzel followed with a couple of RBIs. With a TCU error, the Bulldogs extended their lead to 4-1.

TCU answered right back in the fourth inning when Zach Humphreys hit a liner allowing Bobby Goodloe to score. Gene Wood hit a fly-out RBI to score again, then a double from Phillip Sikes tied the game, 4-4.

It was not until the sixth inning when the scoring would begin again. Tommy Sacco hit an RBI single to center field, allowing two TCU runners to score, giving them a 6-4 lead.

Another big inning in the seventh gave the Bulldogs the lead yet again when Stephen Lund hit a three-run home run, his third of the week, to give Gonzaga a 7-6 lead.

It was games that was destined to go to extra innings, and that’s exactly what happened. TCU’s Gene Wood hit a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth to drive home the tying run for the Frogs.

Both teams could not find the winning run until the top of the eleventh inning when with two outs remaining, Andrew Orzel hit what looked like the closing out of the inning, until a TCU throwing error allowed three runs to score for the Bulldogs, giving them a 10-7 lead.

This error cost the Frogs the game as they could not fight their way back in the next inning.

Gonzaga’s Stephen Lund finished the game with three RBI’s.

TCU’s Tommy Sacco had two RBI’s, making it his second multi-RBI game of the season.

Following the loss, TCU went 3-1 in their next four games. They have a matchup with Tarleton State tomorrow. Then on March 26, they begin their three-game set against the Baylor Bears.
