Lasers upset in first meeting by GNAC rival Saints

NEWTON, Mass. (BVM)– Wednesday afternoon was one full of high expectations as the Lasell Lasers women’s lacrosse team hosted the Emmanuel Saints in an early-season Greater Northeast Athletic Conference matchup and the tenth all-time matchup between the two schools.  The Saints came out and played hard taking this one by a large margin, 21-10.

“Unfortunately, we did not value the ball,” senior captain Jordan McComb said. “We worked so hard to get [the ball] and when we did we were not efficient with it. We recognized our mistakes and are working on fixing them before we see both JWU and Emmanuel again at the end of next week.”

The Lasers won the opening draw control and got themselves on the board first just 58 seconds in on a free position shot by freshman Teresa Kessner. Both Lasell and Emannuel traded goals to start until the Saints scored four unanswered to take a 7-4 lead, a lead that they would never surrender. At the end of the first half, the Saints held a commanding 12-6 lead over the Lasers.

The second half was more of the same. The Saints controlled much of the play and scored at will, finding the weak spots in Lasell’s defensive zone strategy. They outscored Lasell 9-4 to win the game 21-10.

Sydney Brady and Jordan McComb both had good days for the Lasers as they scored four goals each. In goal, Morgan Choquet started off strong making some big saves early on, but the increase in shot volume was too much to handle leaving the day giving up 17 goals, a day to forget.

For the Saints, nine different players scored goals with five of them scoring hat tricks. In goal, Emma Crowley was stellar.  Despite having one rough stretch in the second half, Crowley was spectacular stopping seven of 17 shots and making some huge saves early on to give the Saints a chance to get their footing and take over the game.

These two teams play again next Friday night under the lights at Emmanuel.  The game time is at 7 p.m.
