Skidmore men’s lacrosse kicks off season with overtime win over Lasell University

NEWTON, Mass. (BVM) – The Skidmore men’s lacrosse team kicked off its season with a huge overtime win against Lasell University. After over a year of no competition, the Skidmore lacrosse team was able to pull off a gritty 12-11 win against a worthy Lasell men’s lacrosse team.

The Thoroughbred’s all-freshman attack line had quite the day combining for nine goals and five assists in their college lacrosse debut. Charles McFadden ended the game with the overtime winner 22 seconds into the period. McFadden also had another goal to go along with his three assists. Charlie Kessler capped off the game with four goals and an assist, while Matt Pickney scored three goals, also tacking on an assist to his stat sheet. The other two goal scorers were freshman Brandon Reilly who had two goals and senior captain Jason Schlonsky who netted one for the Thoroughbreds.

The Thoroughbreds relied heavily on Joseph Breen who had a career day going 12-21 from the faceoff X with many crucial faceoffs late in the game. LSM Paul Heffernan led the team with six ground balls.

The Thoroughbreds came out of the gate very slow allowing six goals while only scoring one. As the game went on and after some defensive adjustments the Thoroughbreds settled in and started chipping away at the deficit. Midway through the third period Lasell held a 7-4 lead but Skidmore did not stop fighting. By 11:39, the score of the game was 9-9 after a clutch goal from Charlie Kessler. Lasell did not take this comeback lightly scoring two unanswered goals and making the game feel like it was over.

However, Skidmore was able to score two straight goals to tie the game at 11 with less than a minute left. The Skidmore defense was able to hold off a final try by Lasell before entering the overtime period at 11-11.

When overtime began, Joe Breen cleanly won the faceoff behind him so Paul Heffernan could chase after it. Heffernan flipped the ball behind him to an open Breen, who was able to move the ball to freshman John Sveen. Sveen was able to push the ball ahead to McFadden who netted the game winner.

The Thoroughbreds’ next game was originally scheduled against Plattsburgh but had to be postponed due to Covid-19 restrictions. The Liberty League opener is on March 27 where the Thoroughbreds will be facing off against Union.
