UNM to host five football games in final week of shortened high school season

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — It’s been the most unusual football season ever for high school teams across New Mexico, some of which just began their Covid-shortened seasons last week. But for 10 teams, their seasons will end with a unique opportunity this week.

The New Mexico Activities Association announced Saturday that five Week 5 games — one from each 11-man classification (2A-6A) — will be held at the University of New Mexico’s Dreamstyle Stadium (formerly University Stadium) to close out the shortened spring season.

Two games will be held Thursday, with two of the top-ranked Class 3A teams squaring off at 1 p.m. (local time) when Socorro (3-0) takes on Dexter (3-1). That will be followed by a 5 p.m. matchup between 4A powers Lovington (3-1) and Bloomfield (2-2).

Friday will feature a clash of unbeatens with defending state champ Eunice (4-0) taking on Texico (4-0) at 2 p.m. in a rematch of the 2019 2A championship game. Then at 6 p.m., unbeaten Farmington (4-0) will face Mayfield (2-2) in a battle of top-five ranked 3A teams.

The most intriguing battle at UNM will be saved for last. At 4 p.m. Saturday, Las Cruces (3-0) will square off with Cleveland (3-0) in a showdown of the top-two ranked teams in the state’s biggest class, 6A. The Cleveland Storm are the defending state champs, and although they won’t officially be able to defend their state title this season because playoffs won’t be held this spring, the game might still have a playoff-like atmosphere with arguably the two best teams battling in the final game of the season.
