Former LC Bird basketball star Wiley enters transfer portal after strong career at DelState

CHESTERFIELD, Va. (BVM) — Johquin Wiley was a consistent contributor to the Delaware State University men’s basketball program since he joined the team in 2017. Wiley has played in 114 games with the Hornets, starting 105, leading the team in starts as a true freshman, and has contributed 9.5 points, 3.1 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game. The guard saved his best work for last as during his senior season he notched career highs in points per game and rebounds per game with 10.2 and 3.8 respectively, en route to third team All-Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference honors.

Though the team wasn’t successful, only winning 19 games during Wiley’s time with the Hornets, it was not due to the point guard’s efforts. He consistently led the team in starts, games played and minutes during his tenure.

Now, the senior will look to make his mark elsewhere as a graduate transfer. On March 9, Wiley announced on social media that he would be entering the transfer portal.

Whoever gets the transfer will be blessed with a dedicated and consistent player. Wiley has always proven he can play critical minutes in crucial situations all the way back to his time playing high school basketball in his hometown of Chesterfield.

Wiley was perhaps the brightest star on an LC Bird basketball team full of stars. It was Pinky who hit the buzzer-beating game-winning shot in double-overtime against Albemarle in the Virginia High School League 5A state semifinals to propel the program to the state title game. In the title matchup, the senior would again take his star turn by scoring 13 points and dishing three assists to help the Skyhawks earn their first state title in program history.

That year, Wiley took home pretty much all the hardware an individual could want when he was named the Virginia 5A South Region player of the year, Conference 12 player of the year and 5A state co-player of the year after he averaged 11 points and seven assists per game during his senior season.

With a new environment, Wiley will hopefully be able to return to the winning ways he once enjoyed at LC Bird. For any team looking to add veteran experience and strong commitment to the program, there may not be a better choice than Wiley.
