Former Monacan basketball star Bamisile transfers from VT Hokies to GW Colonials

RICHMOND, Va. (BVM) — Virginia Tech freshman guard Joseph Bamisile announced via Twitter that he would be transferring from the Hokies to the nearby George Washington Colonials following his first season in Blacksburg. During his first campaign, the highly-touted freshman played in just 13 games and contributed 3.5 points and 1.5 rebounds a game.

Bamisile, a Chesterfield native, made a name for himself on the basketball courts in Richmond during his time with the Monacan Chiefs as the team’s star guard. In his junior year, Bamisile showed off his penchant for scoring as he became the leading scorer in the Richmond-area averaging 28.7 points to go along with seven rebounds and just under two assists. The talented junior would be named the Region 4B co-player of the year and would be named Virginia High School League first team 4A all state.

Although he would sit out his senior year with the Chiefs due to an injury, the impact of his game was already felt nationally as the star guard would perform well on the national AAU circuit. Due to his strong performance, Bamisile would be ranked as a unanimous top 100 recruit in the country with ESPN placing him as the No. 78 prospect overall and the 15th-best shooting guard. With a number of teams interested in his talents, Bamisile would choose to stay close to home with the Hokies after decommitting from Northwestern in 2019.

Unfortunately for the Hokies, the freshman would announce his decision to enter the transfer portal on March 22 and has now found a new home up the road in Washington.

Bamisile will join a young Colonials squad that had six underclassmen out its 10 players on the roster this past season. With a former top-100 player on board, GW will look to improve on its 5-12 (3-5 in the A-10) finish from this past season. For Bamisile, he’ll look to use the change of scenery to return to the dominant player he was at Monacan.
