Dayton’s Bogues emerging quickly as track and field star

DAYTON, Ohio (BVM) — Dayton knew it was getting an impressive athlete when New Jersey’s Casey Bogues decided to commit to the Flyers. At Middletown North High School, Bogues became a school-record holder in the indoor shuttle hurdle relay, the three-person long jump relay and the javelin.

It is in fact the javelin that may be her best event in the sport, and she proved so recently on the big stage. At the Yellow Jacket Collegiate Open on March 27, Bogues made a record-breaking throw to win the competition.

The 49.20m throw broke a program record that was previously held by Lillian Cook at 48.99. Bogues’ throw is also currently first in the Atlantic-10 conference and the NCAA Great Lakes, as well as 28th overall in the entire NCAA.

In addition to her success in the javelin, Bogues also broke a personal best in the long jump. She was rewarded for her efforts by being named Atlantic-10 Outdoor Track & Field Rookie of the Week.

It was the second consecutive week that Bogues has earned this honor in a season that is also just two weeks old.

For Bogues, it has to be rewarding just to be able to compete. Although she was able to compete in her indoor season last year as a freshman, both her outdoor season last spring and indoor season this past fall were canceled due to the pandemic.

Now, she is already making headlines in her first full opportunity to display her talents. Bogues will look to keep her hot start going and perhaps make it three-for-three with rookie of the week honors when the Flyers get back in action this weekend at the University of Cincinnati’s Oliver Nikoloff Invitational.
