Dunbar track and field seeks 26th consecutive City League title
DAYTON, Ohio (BVM) — Dunbar boys track and field has been unstoppable over the last two-and-a-half decades within the City League. Led by 31-year head coach Sidney Booker, the Wolverines have won the last 25 City League championships.
Of course, last season the team did not have an opportunity to do so due to the pandemic. But this spring, they are looking to get back to their winning ways.
One challenge the Wolverines will endure this spring is a decreased number of athletes. Compared to a typical 20 to 25-man squad, Dunbar will have just 13 members on its team this year.
Perhaps the top member of Dunbar’s squad is captain Myles Lacking, who is a standout sprinter. He hopes to lead the Wolverines to a state title, which is a level of success they have also seen plenty of in recent memory.
Under coach Booker, Dunbar has won a total of seven outdoor state championships, and also has seven runner-up finishes all-time. The program has also won eight indoor championships.
It remains to be seen what effect a year off and a smaller team will have on Dunbar. But if past history tells us anything, it’s to not bet against this tremendous Wolverines’ program.
