Leslie boys basketball has opportunity to end 53-year drought

LESLIE, Mich. (BVM) — The Leslie boys basketball team has not won a regional championship since 1968. But tonight, the team will have its chance for something they have been waiting 53 years for.

Leslie will take on 18-1 Hanover-Horton in the Division 3 regional championship at Springport High School.

It’s been an impressive season for the Blackhawks who currently sit at 16-1. They have found a way to carry over the special success they had last season as well, and have gone a combined 33-6 over the past two seasons.

To get here, Leslie defeated Bath High School 64-47 on Tuesday night. The Blackhawks put their pressure defense on full display in the first half, taking a 40-23 lead into the halftime break.

The teams would play even in the second half, leading to the 17-point victory for Leslie.

The Blackhawks were led by Nolan Froheip as the senior poured in 27 points which was a career-high. Fellow seniors Ayden Rutan and Lucas McDaniel contributed 13 and 9 points, respectively.

Leslie is led by strong leadership, as Tristian Feighner, Ayron Rutan, Garrett Mays and Jarrett Chappell comprise a seven-player senior class that has helped turn the culture around for the program. Now, the Blackhawks have a chance to take down heavyweight Hanover-Horton and put their name in the history books forever.
