Lobos doubles team of Molina and West nationally ranked

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (BVM) — As the New Mexico men’s tennis team begins defense of its 2019 Mountain West Conference title this week, the Lobos will do so with a nationally-ranked doubles tandem leading them.

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) has UNM’s No. 1 duo of sophomore Sergio Molina and redshirt senior Dominic West ranked No. 59 among the top 80 doubles teams in the nation. The duo is off to a 6-2 start this season, including 4-0 against nationally-ranked teams.

The more experienced of the two players, West is a two-time All-Mountain West Conference performer, having earned the honor in singles as a junior and as a doubles partner to Bart Van Leijsen as a freshman. Molina, meanwhile, played mostly No. 2 doubles with West during his freshman season.

The tandem of Molina and West went 7-0 to claim an undefeated conference title last season, and the Lobos will need their success to continue their team title defense. UNM hasn’t lost a conference match since April 13, 2018.
